7 Sensitive Teeth Tips

Have a toothache? Or do you have a sensitive smile? On days when you’re eating anything and everything that sounds good, you want relief and you don’t want to wait. We get you, and we have a bunch of tips that may even prevent you from having sensitivity problems in the future. It starts with creating an environment that strengthens your teeth, instead of harming them, and it’s much easier than it sounds. All you really need is a good electric toothbrush, a good toothpaste and some easy to find items to give your smile a break.

1) A Soft-Bristled *Electric* Toothbrush

A manual toothbrush could be making your sensitivity issue worse. Brushing your teeth properly with the right amount of force, in the right directions, for the right amount of time isn’t easy to accomplish. With an electric toothbrush however, like the one from TAO Clean, you don’t need to worry about pressing hard on your gums, or scrubbing in circles for long enough because our toothbrushes tell you when you’re done with each section of your mouth, you simply place the brush gently against your teeth and the sonic brushes do the work!

2) Avoid Harsh Foods

Hot and cold foods can bother everyone’s mouth, so we know to look out for them, but what about acidic foods? Spicy food doesn’t just hurt your stomach, it can make your smile hurt too. Caffeinated beverages are also a culprit, along with citrusy foods and drinks, alcohol, high-fat, salty and sugary foods. Not all of these foods are guaranteed to make your sensitivity worse, but if you don’t see your symptoms reside then check your diet to see if you’re ingesting inflammatory foods without knowing it.

3) Mouthguard

If you know you have trouble with grinding your teeth while you sleep then you’ve likely heard of mouth-guards, but these can also help with protecting your tooth enamel. If you have jaw pain or wake up with headaches as well, a mouthguard will reduce it. Mouth-guards can even prevent you from snoring, so if you have sensitive teeth with any of these other symptoms, this may be the solution for you.

4) Sensitive Toothpaste

Depending on the brand of toothpaste (Like Sensodyne or Colgate), you can strengthen your tooth enamel and normalize your nerve endings in your teeth. This, in conjunction with a soft-bristled toothbrush, aids in actively rebuilding your smile instead of causing damage with manual toothbrushes and harsher ingredients in regular toothpastes.

Pro tip: Look for NovaMin, also known as Calcium Phosphate, in your toothpaste to rebuild your teeth faster.

5) Fluoride Gel

An easy way to incorporate fluoride’s benefits is within a gel. Fluoride has been shown to reduce the prevalence of cavities, and it also helps with tooth sensitivity. You can brush it on daily and watch your sensitivity fade away. This gel is especially useful if you have sensitive teeth but you don’t want to give up the foods that exacerbate the pain because it will protect your teeth from those acidic foods if used regularly.

6) Saltwater Mouthwash

We should all be using a mouthwash to keep our smile healthy and clean, but so many are unpleasant that it’s easier for sensitive mouths to go without. Fortunately, if you mix half a teaspoon of salt with a cup of water and swish that around for a minute a day then you’ll get the antibacterial benefits of mouthwash without having to endure the burn of alcohol. This is also a great choice if you have inflamed gums or a gum infection because it removes the harmful bacteria without hurting you.

7) Clove Oil

This is a trick that has been around for what seems like forever, and it actually works. Applying clove oil to a toothache is cheap and fast, and it has antibacterial properties along with being a natural anesthetic. You can expect relief to last for a few hours, but remember that it’s potent on its own, so mix it with coconut oil so it doesn’t damage any parts of the inside of your mouth. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing!

Think back to the days when your smile didn’t get in the way of your life, we think that if you try out some of these tips your smile will be one of your biggest assets. There’s a solution for everyone, sensitive teeth isn’t a life sentence, find what works for you and get your smile back to brilliant!
